What is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga was created in 1995 by a medical doctor in India and at that time he had one “Laughter Club” consisting of 5 people – now over 20 years on there are over 10,000 Laughter Clubs in over 70 countries in the world.

Laughter Yoga doesn’t need special clothing, there are no Warrior poses or Sun Salutations and it doesn’t involve telling jokes or sharing the same sense of humour. Laughter Yoga consists of using laughter exercises to initially simulate laughter which before long turns into genuine infectious laughter and combines this with yogic breathing – hence it’s called Laughter Yoga.

The session includes a “laughter meditation” which is an amazing experience and very cathartic followed by a relaxing Yoga Nidra (a guided relaxation exercise).

Why do Laughter Yoga?

The benefits of Laughter Yoga are too many to list here but below are a few:

  • When we are stressed we release stress hormones i.e. cortisol – these hormones impair our immune system. However, when we laugh we release endorphins and these reduce the stress hormones in our body and strengthens our immune system.
  • The release of endorphins in the brain provides us with a more positive state of mind and this can last for up to 24 hours after 10-15 minutes of sustained laughter. In Laughter Yoga a session lasts around 45 minutes so we achieve this sustained laughter and reap the physiological and psychological benefits.
  • The deep belly laughing in Laughter Yoga increases the oxygen levels in our bodies including the brain by up to 25%. This increases our energy levels, creativity and productivity.
  • There are also social benefits – when we laugh with colleagues we benefit our working relationships and improve team working.
